VoIP solutions can be very beneficial for students looking for a cheap and easy way to keep in touch with friends and family when they head for university.

Many young people are leaving home for the first time and could be studying somewhere a great distance away, so VoIP hardware could help them contact loved ones on a regular basis at a cheaper rate than is often available through normal telephone services, reports Young Money.

A range of VoIP solutions are available. Some involve communicating by way of a special headset plugged into a PC or laptop, while others involve using a handset plugged directly into the phone socket.

Much like general broadband services, the number of VoIP solutions available means that students could compare all the different functions and prices before deciding which one suits them most.

TMCNet.com reports that DMSL, a company that distributes BT's broadband products, has called for a greater industry focus on Wi-Fi technology in the UK market, which is something that could appeal to students.
