A company that distributes BT's broadband products throughout the UK has called for a renewed focus on Wi-Fi technology.

DMSL says that considerable industry focus has shifted from Wi-Fi to mobilebroadband access through devices such as smartphones, despite the fact that Wi-Fi services have also improved and BT is to double the number of UK hotspots it operates, reports TMCNet.com.

Wi-Fi services can be more reliable than accessing the internet through a mobile device and using a wireless network can facilitate the use of VoIP solutions, as well as producing quicker download speeds.

John Carter, managing director of DMSL, said: "A lot of the focus in recent months has been on mobile data and smartphones, but Wi-Fi has not gone away. In fact it is getting faster, more convenient and more affordable."

BT is planning to operate one million Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the UK, providing greater web accessibility for both business and casual users.

Students could find a mobilebroadband service suits them better than a fixed-line service, according to comparison site BroadbandChoices.co.uk.
