Students looking to buy a broadband connection in preparation for university could find that wireless services are a better option for them than the fixed-line alternative.

According to comparison website BroadbandChoices.co.uk, mobilebroadband packages are more flexible and getting a wireless package means that sharing usage of a single fixed-line is no longer an issue, which could be very useful in a student household.

Fixed-line connections remain the best option in terms of performance, but this is not necessarily the main concern for students looking to use VoIP solutions and download media content.

Jon Ingram, operations director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk, said: "[Mobilebroadband] can quite often be an 'instead of' purchase rather than an additional purchase, as it is for most people [looking for it] to give them extra flexibility."

He added that over three-quarters of broadband customers with a fixed-line service have mobile options too.

Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk said that students who opt for only a mobile package could save £130 a year on line rental.
