A broadband expert has called for the unified roll-out of next-generation broadband infrastructure rather than smaller, localised projects.

Edd Dawson, editor of Broadband.co.uk, voiced his enthusiasm towards news that a York company has set up two-gigabit fibre optic links with London's Docklands, but said that future developments should focus on unified upgrades throughout the UK.

He went on to say that the spread of local initiatives could result in "patchy" connectivity around the country for people looking to use VoIP solutions and access faster download speeds.

Mr Dawson said: "The problem that I do see with local initiatives is that there is no real national joined-up infrastructure plan, which means that supply is patchy. So even in York itself it is very much going to depend on whether the fibre goes past your property or not."

The York broadband link has been set up by Your Data Services and has been designed to boost speeds for over 100 businesses that already had fibre optic connections.
