Technology other than wireless broadband may be needed to deliver the government's universal connectivity plan in rural parts of the UK, according to a BT executive.

The government is considering wireless networks as one way to extend universal connectivity to rural communities where laying fibre optic cabling would be far more expensive, but Dr Tim Whitley, BT's group strategy director, says it may not be entirely suitable, reports eWeek Europe.

He said wireless networks might not have the necessary bandwidth needed to provide broadband services for an entire community and could lack the reliability of fixed-line alternatives.

Mr Whitley said: "The Digital Britain report says there will be a role for wireless, but the degree of that role is critically linked to what the services are."

Wireless technology could offer more efficient use of VoIP solutions and Mr Whitley conceded that download speeds could be high, but it may not be the best answer.

Satellite connectivity is another option being considered, as prices could fall when the technology becomes more widespread across Europe.
