Web users in Glasgow could have access to more effective VoIP solutions and quicker download times sooner as plans to deliver high-speed infrastructure have been brought forward.

Major internet service provider (ISP) BT has announced it will bring the roll-out operation forward by six months, meaning nearly 16,000 Glasgow homes will have access to speeds of up to 40 megabits per second sooner than expected.

The roll-out will involve the laying of around 30 miles of fibre optic cabling and nearly 60 new cabinets being installed in the streets of Cardonald, Crookston and Hillington to connect individual homes to the new infrastructure.

Bob Downes, BT Openreach director for Scotland, said: "We couldn't have made this a reality without the co-operation and commitment from Glasgow city council, who have supported us all along the road and totally grasped the importance and business potential this can deliver for the city."

BT is trialling high-speed broadband services throughout the UK, although it faces stiff competition from rival ISP Virgin Media.
