VoIP hardware could become much more dominant in the market when telecoms companies choose to focus on it as their main product, according to Analysys Mason.

Rupert Wood, principal analyst at the telecoms adviser, said that one of the reasons why VoIP solutions have not yet become more popular is that telecoms firms have failed to focus on the technology as their primary product, but this is likely to change soon.

Software-based VoIP solutions are developing a growing customer base in the UK and so mainstream adoption could take place within the near future.

Mr Wood said: "There is no major operator in the UK offering voice over IP on a major basis, except as a secondary line service."

Public awareness of VoIP solutions has increased to 60 per cent over the course of the last year, while there was a year-on-year increase of almost ten per cent in the number of people using the technology during the first three months of 2009.
