More than half of broadband users in the UK think the future of connectivity in Britain should lie with fibre optic networks, according to research from ISPreview.co.uk.

The website surveyed 400 web users and found over half want the government to support the spread of next-generation cabling, while just over 15 per cent would prefer wireless services to be prioritised.

Fibre optic technology supports broadband speeds considerably faster than the average connections currently available in the UK and can be used to make VoIP solutions work more effectively.

Mark Jackson, founder and editor of ISPreview UK, said: "It is clear from the results that consumers do not wish to be short-changed by expensive, unreliable or inflexible 'quick-fix' solutions, especially with remote and rural residents often existing on lower incomes."

According to the survey, 12 per cent of respondents said they would be happy for government funds to be spent on developing ways to deliver broadband by satellite technology, which is one possible method of connecting rural homes to the web.
