Micro-blogging site Twitter is proving an effective tool for web users looking for swift action from their internet service provider (ISP) when they have internet problems.

Many ISPs have come under fire recently for failing to provide good customer service, but a range of companies are now posting dozens of 'tweets' every day as they respond to service issues discussed on the Twitter network by their users, reports Top 10 Broadband.

Customer who could be tweeting about anything from problems using their VoIP solutions through to general download speeds are getting replies from ISPs within minutes in some cases.

Jessica McArdle, marketing manager at Top 10 Broadband, said: "Twitter is allowing broadband providers to reach out to their customer base as never before and address problems faster and more efficiently."

She added that Twitter potentially enables ISPs to gain new customers as they can demonstrate a level of customer service that could appeal to a range of people.

The international profile of Twitter has risen within the involvement of celebrity tweeters such as Stephen Fry, Demi Moore and her husband Ashton Kutcher.
