Zoneflex wireless internet technology will allow people to use VoIP solutions when it is used at the World of Music and Dance (Womad) festival.

Ruckus Wireless has developed the system specifically for outdoor use and it utilises a mesh aerial technology that is designed to maximise broadband access by rebounding the signal around physical obstructions.

The system will be used at Womad in Wiltshire's Charleton Park this weekend (July 24th to 26th) and can be used for credit card transactions and CCTV operations, as well as for VoIP hardware.

Tom McInerney, operations director for Etherlive, the company that provides the festival's technology, said: "Building a flexible and robust Wi-Fi network on such a large scale, covering a massive outdoor space, supporting a huge number of concurrent users and delivering simultaneous voice, video and data services is a major undertaking."

Wireless technology is one option being considered to help deliver the government's universal connectivity plan to rural parts of the UK.
