Residents in the Greek capital Athens are to get higher mobilebroadband speeds of up to 21.6 megabits per second (Mbps) as a result of a new service from Vodafone.

The development will mean that the Greeks will have access to one of the fastest mobilebroadband networks in Europe, giving them better download speeds and potentially better use of VoIP solutions, reports Broadband Genie.

Vodafone Greece has a reputation for technical innovation and has already offered customers download speeds of more than 14Mbps so far this year.

The company's UK branch lacks this reputation, but mobilebroadband networks may be used by the government in the coming years to provide rural communities with web services and help reach the goal of providing every British homeowner with an internet connection by 2012.

In line with the recent Digital Britain report the target connection speed is 2Mbps, although some businesses say this will be too slow in 2012.
