Web users in Lincoln may find they have more effective use of VoIP hardware and faster download speeds with news that they are to get a wireless network.

A series of companies has developed the network that will be operated by AB Internet and the service will be primarily available to 12,000 students at Lincoln University and to additional users through Lincoln council, reports SourceSecurity.com.

Workers are likely to be able to use mobile devices to retrieve information from the council's central database, while the local police will use the network for remote surveillance purposes.

Darren Round, managing director of AB Internet, told the website: "We have built a commercially sustainable wireless broadband network. Several consumer segments and organisations in Lincoln would like to have data on the move. Our network far exceeds anything that 3G will be able to provide - now and in the future."

Major internet service provider BT is to trial high-speed web services in nearly 70 towns and cities across the UK.
