New broadband technology dubbed Long Term Evolution (LTE) by creator Ericsson could enable web users to access speeds of 150 megabits per second (Mbps).

The company remains cautious on day-to-day speeds customers would be able to access using the technology, as internet service providers have been criticised in recent months for misleading advertising, but it says speeds are likely to be ten times higher than the UK average, reports PC Pro.

Connection speeds of this nature could allow VoIP solutions to be used more effectively, while enabling web content to be consumed from multiple outlets in a single home.

John Cunliffe, Ericsson's chief technology officer, told the website: "Our roadmap will see us move from 150Mbps to 300Mbps and then 600Mbps during the first phase of LTE. Advanced LTE will top one gigabit per second - that's the real 4G technology - but that's a long way off."

The current problem is that the service relies on the 900MHz mobile spectrum operated by O2 and Vodafone, but the government is negotiating to make this available.

Using this part of the spectrum could also help deliver mobilebroadband services to rural communities.
