A broadband network in North Yorkshire that could facilitate more efficient VoIP solutions has been praised by the prime minister, Gordon Brown.

Internet service provider NYnet has helped to set up broadband links throughout rural communities in the area by installing high-speed technology at more than 40 different North Yorkshire libraries among over 500 sites run by the region's local authority, reports ISPreview.co.uk.

Mr Brown praised the company for delivering the service and helping work towards the government's target of connecting every UK home by 2012.

Andy Lister, NYnet's Sales and Marketing Director, told the website: "We are delighted that Gordon Brown has taken such an interest in North Yorkshire and has recognised the important role that NYnet plays."

He added that the company plans further expansion in the region to help deliver internet access to even more people.

There has been concern that rural communities would not benefit from the government's universal connectivity plan due to the expense of providing access to users not situated close to a telephone exchange.
