CCP: Switching broadband services could be easier

The Communications Consumer Panel (CCP) has said that broadband regulator Ofcom should do more to make it easier for web users to switch internet service providers (ISPs).

While many web browsers may be searching for better priced deals offering faster connection speeds and more effective use of VoIP solutions, ISPs that use local loop unbundled (LLU) technology are not covered as effectively by Ofcom rules.

LLU providers manage their own service provision by installing their equipment in telephone exchanges and buying access to the ADSL network run by BT, but customers using these services do not get a Migration Authorisation Code (MAC) if they want to switch providers.

Anne Bradley, chair of the CCP, said: "Where possible, Ofcom should impose on providers that break the rules financial penalties that have a wider deterrent effect. This would help to raise the level of compliance across the industry."

With competition being so intense between ISPs in the UK broadband market, prices are often very attractive and many web users may choose to look around for a better deal.
