Mobile VoIP users may soon be able to access the technology regardless of whether there is a Wi-Fi or 3G connection with their mobile device, it has been reported.

According to TMCnet, experts from Nimbuzz are using Voxbone's telephone numbers and origination services to offer a new VoIP service to mobile users that does not require the standard internet connection.

Instead, the VoIP services are transmitted via a two or 2.5G connection.

"We can provide reliable mobile VoIP outside of internet range and over 2G networks in over 50 countries, with any internet-enabled handset and no change in user behaviour," Tobias Kemper, Nimbuzz head of communications, explained to the publication.

MobileVoIP solutions are becoming increasingly popular in the UK as a way to make cheap calls while on the move.

Earlier this year, the launch of VoIP provider Skype's application onto the Apple iPhone saw over one million downloads during the first two days of service.
