Broadband schemes in rural communities should be bolstered to aid universal connectivity, according to the Commission for Rural Communities (CRC).

Over 40 per cent of web users in rural parts of the UK are yet to receive speeds of two megabits per second (Mbps) and the CRC is calling for rural community schemes to get fibre optic upgrades to help improve download speeds and access to VoIP solutions.

The CRC has called for a firm strategy for the government in how to include rural web users in the universal connectivity scheme that is due to connect every UK home by 2012.

Stephen Carter, minister for communications, technology and broadcasting said: "The CRC's report rightly highlights the need to ensure rural communities aren't left behind as the rest of the UK enjoys the benefits of digital technologies, both social and economic."

Connecting rural homes is likely to be expensive as broadband speeds dissipate the further the web user is situated from the telephone exchange.

Satellite and wireless technologies are among the methods being considered to ensure countryside communities receive a good service.
