New statistics have revealed there are now 5.9 million unbundled broadband lines across the UK, offering internet and VoIP users the opportunity to receive services from a wide variety of suppliers.

According to the figures from the Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator, there was a 0.6 million increase in the number of unbundled broadband lines in Britain between April and May this year.

Between May 2008 and the same month this year the number of unbundled lines had grown by 1.26 million, the survey stated.

Access to unbundled broadband lines allows users to switch suppliers from BT to a number of other companies, offering greater competition on pricing and quality of service and ensuring the best broadband package is available to the user.

This can be particularly important for businesses and individuals regularly using VoIP technology as they will require a high level of service and high-speed internet access.

BT has recently announced plans to upgrade all its customers to 20Mb broadband services for free in a move that will challenge other providers to boost the speed over their own services.

Earlier this year, Virgin Media announced it is to trial a 200Mb broadband service for some UK customers.
