Consumer Focus has called for further action to bridge the so-called 'digital divide' that affects the UK.

Around 60 per cent of Britons have a broadband service, but there are still nearly 20 million people who have yet to install a connection, with only around 25 per cent of low-income families enjoying web access and being able to benefit from VoIP solutions and additional applications.

Consumer Focus has called for greater emphasis on usability and affordability in the industry, as opposed to concentrating purely on developing faster speeds.

Jonathan Stearn of Consumer Focus said: "If the government is to deliver on its promise for interactive services it must make sure everyone can truly access them. Having broadband in the area is important, but cables and wires are only the first step."

He added that one possible solution is ensuring that low-income families have access to lower prices from internet service providers (ISPs).

In related news, a collection of major ISPs have signed up to principles of good practice introduced by industry watchdog Ofcom.
