Average broadband connection speeds in the UK rose in May, according to a new report, potentially benefitting users of VoIP hardware.

Research from broadband.co.uk revealed that average speeds reached 4.25 megabits per second (Mbps), with figures calculated from thousands of web users logging onto the website and taking part in speed tests.

Average speeds also passed the 4Mbps mark in April and so the new data suggests that these results were not an anomaly.

Edd Dawson, with broadband.co.uk, said: "What stands out though is that despite this increase our tests show that the average line still only receives 80 per cent of the maximum speed achievable, meaning that for many customers significant gains could be realised just by their broadband provider supplying what's already possible."

Britain is falling behind the rest of the world in terms of broadband investment, although several internet service providers are developing next-generation networks.

The government aims to deliver speeds of at least 2Mbps to all homeowners by 2012.
