The growing popularity of satellite broadband could result in current high charges being reduced to provide greater access, according to top10-broadband.co.uk.

Satellite connectivity is being viewed as one of the best ways to deliver broadband speeds of at least two megabits per second (Mbps) to rural communities in the UK and help improve VoIP solutions and other activities as part of the plans recently put forward by the Digital Britain report.

Avanti Communications could soon be providing a 2Mbps service by satellite, but the initial installation costs will start at £300 and may not be immediately within reach for some.

Simon Barrett, head of European marketing at Avanti, told the website: "We expect our terminal costs to reduce significantly. I think in the first instance that we're still going to be looking at around the £300-400 installation mark. But once we get the volume up, then we can see some benefit from it."

In other technology news, research organisation Infonetics has forecast that consumers will embrace VoIP solution on a grander scale in the coming years, reports destinationcrm.com.
