The proliferation of VoIP hardware being adopted by private web users and businesses is contributing to bandwidth issues, according to a study from NetEvidence.

According to the network performance management company, many web users are choosing to adopt VoIP solutions in order to save money on telecommunications expenses during the current recession, but the scale of take-up has led to reduced performance on some older browsers.

Some internet service providers are reducing their prices in order to keep customers happy and to discourage them from switching to rivals.

Richard Thomas, managing director of NetEvidence, said: "Service providers themselves are not chasing for upgrades. However, if asked to re-price, many will offer competitively priced upgrades."

He added that many users have the opportunity to negotiate lower prices for an array of faster services that are frequently being launched.

In related news, the UK has been ranked in the top five of 30 nations encompassed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development as a result of having more than 17 million broadband subscribers in December last year.
