Thai Airways in Sweden is planning to use VoIP solutions to provide additional communications technology to passengers during the global downturn.

In a bid to reduce running costs, the airline has formed an agreement with IT company Carl Lamm to install a new, flexible telephone system that can be adjusted at certain times of the day when usage peaks.

More traditional exchange systems could lack the flexibility on offer through VoIP solutions and in addition would be more expensive to upgrade.

Mans Sjostedt, chief executive officer at Carl Lamm, said: "Given the right IT infrastructure conditions, IP telephony has the required technological qualities that make it possible even for established companies to take the step and leave traditional telephony."

Carl Lamm will supply the traffic management solution as well as the server and the telephone system itself will be modernised within a lower budget.

In related news, AirTran Airways in the US has announced plans to install broadband networks on its planes in a bid to gain further market supremacy, according to United Press International.
