A funding boost has been allocated to researchers who are developing next-generation networks capable to delivering connection speeds of 10Gbit/s.

Up to £100,000 will be awarded for each of a series of new projects supported by quango the Technology Strategy Board (TSB), an organisation sponsored by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.

The intention is to develop the necessary technology to install a next-generation network across the whole of the European Union, to potentially improve download speeds, increase the usage of VoIP solutions and make the entire continent more competitive.

Mike Biddle, lead technologist for TSB, said: "Our intention in providing this funding is to help British companies establish future European collaborations that will participate in larger EU funding initiatives."

He added that the organisation aims to develop the technology more fully over the next decade and to use it as a tool to boost the UK economy.

In related news, the Register reports that British law enforcement agents are looking to gain further powers to conduct remote searches in Europe.
