American airline AirTran Airways has announced that it will become the world's first operator to completely fit its fleet with on-board broadband internet.

The carrier has partnered with airline broadband specialist Aircell to introduce the new service.

Its fleet of 136 jets, including Boeing 717 and 737 jets, will receive the technology, with the project scheduled to be completed by mid-summer.

Bob Fornaro, AirTran chairman, president and chief executive officer, claimed to United Press International that the new service will set the airline "apart" from its competitors.

"No matter which flight they are on, the airline cabin will be their mobile office, social network, online mall or whatever they want it to be," he said.

While other airlines have introduced in-flight broadband, AirTran will be the first operator to roll-out the service to its entire fleet.

Car manufacturer Ford recently announced plans to introduce a new in-car broadband service for a range of its new models.
