Very few broadband users in the UK switch their service provider in order to get the most affordable package, new research suggests.

According to research by comparison website Consumer Choices, just ten per cent of broadband users switched their service in 2008 for a better deal.

The report indicates that many households are being deterred from changing their provider due to the complexity of bundled deals involving phone, internet and television.

Another issue is the potentially large fees involved with breaking out of sign-up contracts for broadband, which can often be as high as 18 months in duration.

Michael Phillips, product director at BroadbandChoices, pointed out that many providers save the most attractive deals for new users, which could result in some households being stuck on costly legacy tariffs.

Mr Phillips said that people often "don't realise that by switching - or asking for a better deal - they can get a newer, cheaper and faster service", meaning broadband can become the "forgotten bill".

"We urge consumers to check they are not stuck on a legacy tariff with their current provider - if they haven't switched in the past year, then it's time to get online and compare current deals," he added.

In related news, the latest speed tests by Broadband Genie have revealed that the average download speed actually meeting advertised rates marketed by providers was just 45.8 per cent.
