The government must do more to bridge the growing "digital divide" among UK households, as many struggle to afford new technologies such as broadband, new research suggests.

Back in March, telecoms regulator Ofcom revealed that broadband take-up is presently below 60 per cent of UK households.

According to a discussion paper commissioned by campaigning group Consumer Focus, broadband is becoming an essential tool for Brits, but many still struggle to afford the equipment and subscription fees.

Produced by George and Lennard Associates, the study revealed that just over a quarter of homes earning £11,500 currently have broadband, compared to 77 per cent of households boasting incomes over £30,000.

Consumer Focus' Jonathan Stearn told the Guardian: "If government is to deliver on its promise for interactive services, it must make sure everyone can truly access them.

"Having broadband in the area is important, but cables and wires are only the first step. People who can't afford internet access or who feel unable to use it are increasingly at a disadvantage as technology moves on."

In related news, research by Virgin Media recently claimed that many British people struggle with technical terms such broadband, which suggests more needs to be done to educate the population.
