Companies can enjoy significant benefits to their cost base with hosted Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), but many are still unsure about taking the plunge, experts claim.

According to an article on FierceVoIP, incorporating legacy systems with IP communications is "where the commercial voice market is heading".

However, many customers still prove reluctant to change service provider and can often prove unsure about throwing away existing equipment to implement a new system.

Despite this, the website points out cable operators are increasingly "working the hosted VoIP services angle to gain an edge on incumbent providers".

Data from NRPG placed the value of hosted IP voice at around $16 billion (£10.98 billion) in 2008 of the total $110 billion business communications market.

Therefore, the article suggests that hosted VoIP will be a key growth area in the communications industry going forward.

In related news, Fulcrum Group co-founder David Johnson recently told Business Solutions that VoIP managed services have the potential to grow in popularity over the coming years.
