Consumers will soon be able to make Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls at Starbucks after the coffee chain rolled out a new Wi-Fi network, it has emerged.

British Telecom (BT) will provide wireless internet hot spots for all 650 of the firm's coffee shops throughout the UK and Ireland.

This means that Starbucks customers will be able to make VoIP calls and surf the internet while having a coffee.

Chris Bruce, chief executive officer of BT Openzone, pointed out that "coffee shops are increasingly popular as a third place to work or log on to the internet".

He added: "The location of Starbucks stores in the high street and travel hubs is helping to extend the reach of Wi-Fi to customers."

In other news, car maker Ford recently announced a new in-car computer system that will enable owners to access broadband from their vehicles.

Drivers of Ford F-150, E-Series, Super Duty and Transit Connect trucks will be able to take advantage of the Ford Work Solutions package, which will allow them to use computer software and go online.
