Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) managed services have the potential to grow in popularity over the coming years, an expert suggests.

David Johnson, co-founder and vice president of the Fulcrum Group, told Business Solutions that "VoIP has been on fire the last few years, especially with companies with fewer than 100 employees".

He added: "But, while we were selling a lot of VoIP, the ongoing revenue past that was limited and we wanted to capture recurring revenue from those customers."

Mr Johnson pointed out that many managed service providers have delayed offering VoIP managed services due to concerns about the lack of telephony monitoring and management platforms.

However, he pointed out that the technology platforms underpinning VoIP are usually stable and experience less downtime, which could boost VoIP managed services.

"Other businesses have done managed services in the telecom business for years - we just called them maintenance agreements," he said.

Meanwhile, a report on TTGLive has said that VoIP is proving popular as a way for businesses to save money while the economy continues to slow.
