Companies intending to deploy Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) should be aware of certain security issues potentially affecting their business, an expert suggests.

Writing on SearchVoIP.com, communications professional Mike Chapple pointed out that IP telephony users should be aware of security issues such as the need for encryption on voice and data communication.

Mr Chapple explained some VoIP service provider offer encryption services, but those users who cannot access to the technology should consider "placing the call manager at your site".

He recommended that companies introducing a VoIP system should create specialist virtual local area networks (VLAN) for voice and data networks to ensure security for internal and external calls.

"The simplest thing you can do is separate voice and data traffic on your network," he said.

"Create segmented VLANs for all voice devices and use both policy and technical measures to prohibit the use of data devices on those VLANs."

Meanwhile, ProcessOne chief executive officer Mickael Remond recently claimed that a mobile version of VoIP is currently at "proof of concept" stage.
