Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over mobile networks is still an evolving concept but it could guarantee cheap calls for users, an expert suggests.

Mickael Remond, chief executive officer of ProcessOne, said that recent developments in the use of VoIP on smart-phones could trigger greater developments in the industry.

Mr Redmond pointed out that these initiatives will lead to network providers feeling the impact, but the communications service still has a long way to go before it is truly ready to grow.

Despite the fact that mobile VoIP is an evolving concept, he explained that it can theoretically enable "users to make cheap calls abroad".

"However, usage is currently restricted to Wi-Fi networks - meaning users need to be connected to them in order to make and receive calls, which does limit mobility," he added.

In related news, the Voice On the Net (VON) coalition has issued a plea to the European Union to stop mobile operators from blocking access to VoIP services over cellular/3G networks.
