An expert from within the Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) field has claimed that a mobile version of the technology is currently at "proof of concept" stage.

According to Mickael Remond, chief executive officer of real-time communications service provider ProcessOne, mobile VoIP has potential to advance as more users experience the technology.

"At this stage, [it] is much more a proof of concept of what can be done with mobile VoIP, as the user experience is lagging and there are restrictions on how you can use the application," he stated.

However, Mr Remond added that the concept of mobile VoIP is not new, with some firms having used the technology for some time to create applications that support instant messaging (IM) with gateways to existing IM networks.

In related news, findings by TeleGeography have highlighted that cross-border telephone traffic rose by 14 per cent in 2007 and an estimated 12 per cent last year.
