Technology business such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service providers have the potential to survive and prosper during the global economic downturn, new research suggests.

According to research by trade body Intellect, technology-focused industries have the potential to remain strong due to an ability to adapt and change.

Broadband and VoIP service providers are two particular industries where developments already underway could help drive the market forward.

Charles Ward, chief operating officer at the firm, commented: "Unlike many other industries, this sector, in terms of what's happening out there in the wider customer base, doesn't stand still."

Mr Ward cautioned, though, that many firms are currently in "shock phase" during the recession, leading to a potential scaling back in their IT spending plans.

"I think that you're seeing that effect where people are cutting or delaying things that they can delay," he added.

Rob Lith, chief executive of Connection Telecom, recently told South African newspaper the Times that an investment in IP-based telephony can bring various benefits to call centres.
