Small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) in the US state of Texas have been enjoying the benefits of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), according to reports.

Austin-based service provider Starview has introduced session initiation protocol (SIP) into its suite of business-focused IP communications solutions.

This has meant that businesses in Texas are now able to experience the efficiency and cost cutting benefits of converged voice and data communications.

David Walsh, president of StarView, said: "The current economic downturn provides fertile ground for the new business."

"We're offering SMBs a painless way to upgrade to integrated VoIP and high-speed internet service, which will enable powerful new communications tools and cost significantly less than traditional telecommunications service," he added.

Jeff Pulver, founder of the HD Communications Summit, recently said that high-definition (HD) VoIP could represent the future of the industry.

Speaking to Telephony Online, he claimed HD VoIP can create a much higher quality of service compared to legacy telephone networks.
