Telecoms giant Ericsson has recently trialled broadband network infrastructure technology, which is believed to enable speeds of up to 500Mbps.

The firm has tested the use of a copper wire network used with VDSL2-based technology to potentially improve the delivery speeds of consumer broadband.

Despite the fact that the approach is unusable for long distance network connections, it may be useful for the so called 'last-mile' connections to link households to a larger fibre network.

It also suggested that the network technology could prove important in guaranteeing the delivery of online television and video-on-demand services.

Hakan Eriksson, Ericsson chief technical officer, said that the project underlines the firm's commitment to "leadership in broadband access technology" as well as a "commitment to the continued research and development of DSL technology".

"It also proves Ericsson's abilities to provide future mobile backhauling, which will enable the quick and cost-effective introduction of long-term evolution solutions," he added.

Quintain managing director James Saunders recently told the Wembley and Kingsbury Times that its new 100Mbps broadband network at the Wembley City development is "five years ahead of the market".
