A new Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) registry service is set to launch in the summer which is claimed to free up communications between internet telephony users.

The Enum Consortium has created the directory of contact information, which will be managed in the public domain by internet service provider Nominet.

It is argued that this will enable users on disparate service to more easily get in contact with each other free of charge, which could bring positive developments to the technology.

Phil Kingsland, director of marketing at Nominet, told ZD Net that the most likely users for the service will be "businesses that have large networks that they work with".

"Also, those in the customer-services industry who want to reduce the cost of calls coming in to themselves - if they are advertising an Enum number their calls would go over the internet for free," he added.

Set up with recognition from the Department of Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, Enum was established to better connect digital telephone users by converting telephone numbers into domain names.
