The majority of British internet users will benefit in the future from super-fast broadband, a leading organisation claims.

Analysis firm Point Topic has predicted that 90 per cent of UK households will be able to access speeds of up to 32Mbps in the next ten years.

However, the company's chief analyst Tim Johnson has warned that this will only be possible with some "focused and vigorous action by both government and industry".

"There needs to be a strong commitment to universal service, and serious investment in getting no-net homes online," he explained.

"It might seem a big step today, but I think that it's one of the best things we could do to restructure our economy as we emerge from the financial crisis."

Mr Johnson also backed British Telecom's fibre-to-the-cabinet roll-out plans to bring reliable internet connects to the so-called slowband areas of the UK.

Ronan Dunne, chief executive of mobile giant O2, recently told the Independent that all broadband stakeholders in the UK must cooperate effectively in order to boost high-speed broadband development.
