A US-based veterinary practice has experienced the benefits of introducing VoIP communications in providing a vital link between mobile and static teams.

Highland Heights Animal Hospital in northern Kentucky introduced an IP telephony solution into its three mobile examination and pharmacy vehicles.

Phones in the vans are connected to mobilebroadband meaning that staff can enjoy the same communications infrastructure as though they were in the office.

Shandon Stamper, co-owner of the animal hospital, said that medical teams and technicians on the move need to stay in constant touch with on-site teams at the facility.

Ms Stamper said it is also "vital" for clients to be kept informed about the condition of their pets, including "if they need further medical care".

"We can easily manage the system ourselves, make clients happier, and save money by using our staff resources wisely," she explained.

"When it comes to communications, even the smallest business wants the same benefits that big business gets."

David Schenkel, chief technology officer at Objectworld Communications, recently wrote on eWeek that businesses should consider software-based communications as a way to go green.
