Companies should remember that there are extra benefits on offer with VoIP beyond its mere cost-saving potential, an expert claims.

Writing in a blog on InformationWeek, Chris Murphy said that most businesses focus on the cost-cutting potential of VoIP, particularly on long-distance calls and teleconferencing.

However, Mr Murphy suggests that most IT professionals can call on at least one experience in which the additional benefits of VoIP have "brought home the value of it".

"Chief information officers should look for the larger opportunities that are harder to measure, from better co-worker collaboration to better customer service," he added.

"Connecting people more effectively is the real road to glory and it will have an impact every bit as powerful as a cost saving."

Greg Anderson, global general manager at FrontRange Solutions, recently told IT World that companies should consider the benefits VoIP can have to customer service techniques.

Mr Anderson also indicated that the communications technology can also benefit other areas of the business, such as the service desk.
