A significant proportion of businesses in the US have deployed VoIP but there is also plenty of scope for future growth of the technology, a new report clams.

According to an American business VoIP market study compiled by In-Stat, revenues derived from IP telephony topped $1.1 billion (£773.9 million) at the close of 2008.

The research indicated that one in three American companies which have deployed VoIP now use it as their exclusive voice communication service.

David Lemelin, In-Stat analyst, said: "IP continues to be a partial voice solution for most businesses with VoIP, particularly among larger businesses."

"Therefore, there is significant room for growth even among businesses that have already adopted it," he added.

The report also revealed that 32 per cent of American enterprises have had to delay their VoIP deployment due to the current economic downturn.

Writing on Law.com, Peter Baran from legal firm Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth described VoIP as "the wave of the future" for business telecoms.
