The quantity of broadband lines issued in the UK is now moving close to the 17 million mark, new figures reveal.

Telecoms regulator Ofcom has released new statistics indicating that there were 16.9 million active broad connections at the end of September 2008.

Figures also revealed that around 322,000 new lines were established during the third quarter last year, while 5.6 million local loop unbundling ports are now in operation.

Michael Phillips, Broadband Choices product director, commented that these figures show the resilience in the broadband sector, despite the current recession.

"Although times are hard at the moment, people are reluctant to ditch their broadband because of all the benefits it brings," he explained.

"As well as helping people keep in touch, the internet is essential in looking for new job opportunities and even saves people money by helping users find the best deals on their shopping, groceries and household amenities."

According to Wireless Intelligence, the global mobile industry is now closing on its 100 millionth mobilebroadband connection.
