Despite the current recession, now may be the right time for the government to invest in the creation of a high-speed broadband network, a leading organisation suggests.

The recently released Interim Digital Britain report stipulated that the government will consider the "value for money" case and whether public incentives could play a part in future network fibre roll out.

Jon Moulton, managing partner at private equity firm Alchemy Partners, said that an infrastructure project could prove an effective use of public money during the downturn.

According to ZD Net, Mr Moulton said at London's Regent Conference: "A broadband rollout is a useful way to put money out there fairly quickly."

"It's probably the only area where we can do something substantial at this point in the recession," he explained.

Households in Wembley City, which is close to the national football stadium in London, can now access broadband of 100Mbps at the cost of £1 for a 30 minute session.
