The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) has questioned the ambition of the government's recently announced universal broadband pledge.

Lord Carter's interim Digital Britain report has outlined that all households in the UK should be able to access broadband of a minimum speed of 2Mbps by 2012.

The ELSPA, which represents video games publishers, has welcomed the pledge as a positive move which will help as the industry moves online.

However, ELSPA managing director Michael Rawlinson told Tech Radar that they have "concerns" that the proposed 2Mbps broadband speed is "too slow".

"We look forward to speaking to the government about this, and more, in due course," he added.

Analysis firm Games Investor Consulting has claimed that British-produced video games carried a value of around £2 billion in 2008.

Gaming publishers and consumers in many south Asian countries already experience broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps, including plans recently revealed in South Korea for a 1GB service.
