Households around Wembley Stadium in London are some of the first in Britain to benefit from super-fast 100Mbps broadband, it has emerged.

According to a report conducted by the Communications Consumer Panel, there are now 40 next-generation broadband projects being conducted in the UK.

The first to reach live stage covers the area around the national football stadium, called Wembley City, which will eventually have 12,000 apartments.

Quintain Estates, which is behind the project, has revealed that the first 286 dwellings launched last October are now receiving the 100Mbps service.

Residents are offered broadband in 8Mbps, 16Mbps and 32Mbps packages with the option to upgrade to the maximum speed for half an hour periods during the day.

James Saunders, Quintain's managing director of commercial ventures, said: "The scale of Quintain's schemes enables us to embed and operate next generation technology for homes and businesses in a highly cost effective and streamlined manner."

"This model has a vital role to play in achieving the government's objective anticipated within the Digital Britain report of universal delivery of high-speed broadband services and digital television," he added.

Whitchurch in south Wales, Muswell Hill in north London and Bournemouth are just three of the other locations chosen for 100Mbps trials.
