US telecoms giant Verizon has launched a new VoIP hub phone which offers advanced functionality for consumers.

The Verizon Hub features a touch-screen display alongside the ability to receive text messages and use web-based widgets.

By connecting to a broadband service and paying a monthly fee, users can get unlimited free calls and video messages.

The touch-screen also offers a web browser and access to information services such as stock updates, directions and even movie trailers.

Mike Lanman, vice-president and chief marketing officer at Verizon Wireless, said in a statement: "The Verizon Hub is going to change the way you think about what you want and need your home phone to do."

"Whether you're thinking about getting rid of your home phone or can't live without it, now is the time to try out the Verizon Hub," he added.

T-Mobile also recently launched a consumer phone system called @Home, which incorporates VoIP and cellular connectivity.
