The National Broadband Scheme (NBS) for Ireland is aiming for 100 per cent broadband coverage in the country by 2010, it has emerged.

Irish communications minister Eamon Ryan has announced that the €223 million (£209.6 million) scheme will provide broadband for the ten per cent of the country's population presently unable to receive the service.

This will mean that 223,000 additional homes will get a reliable internet connection offering at least a minimum download speed of 1.2Mbps.

Mr Ryan said that this programme will provide a "boost" for the rural economy and also create up to 170 new jobs during the roll out.

"Now businesses throughout the country can have ready access to the national and international markets," he explained.

"Employment will be created and sustained. Quality of life will improve for rural residents and communities will be strengthened."

Mobile operator 3 has been selected to conduct the broadband roll out in November after beating Eircom, IFA/Motorola and BT Ireland to the contract.
