The economic slowdown may have the effect of triggering a growth spurt in the VoIP market, a leading expert claims.

Speaking to TMC.net, cyLogistics president Don Witt said that a greater number of executives are now "under the gun to cut costs".

Mr Witt pointed out that there are a number of ways in which companies can trim their cost base but one of the most obvious is with their phone bill.

He added that "this will force many companies to take the digital/VoIP plunge" meaning that sales of the technology will "increase significantly over the next year or two".

"As identified in the post-melt down chart, VoIP sales may increase by 200-300 per cent over previous forecasts," Mr Witt explained.

"Thus, next year's VoIP growth can be expected to jump from four per cent to eight per cent or 12 per cent or more next year."

According to a report by T3i Group, the market for hosted VoIP services is likely to increase over the next year as companies aim for greater cost savings.
