One of the country's most successful independent small self-administered scheme (SSAS) pension providers has saved money by using VoIP phones.

Rowanmoor Pensions began using a unified communications solution in 2006 and has saved more than £200,000 since, CBR reports.

The technology has allowed the firm to contact local offices freely, while reducing international calls to the same cost as national ones.

Additionally, employees can now work remotely with their phone calls routed to their mobile and conference calls are free, saving money on travel costs.

"Since adopting this strategy we have really streamlined our communication processes," said Rowanmoor joint managing director David Seaton.

The use of VoIP market is strong despite the economic slowdown, according to a report released last month.

A study by Infonetics Research described the outlook for the VoIP provider market as "decent".

It had reported a drop of eight per cent during the third quarter of the year but added that this was not too bad relative to other sectors.
