UK consumers will soon be able to access on-demand television over broadband, following an announcement by BT, the BBC and ITV.

The three will be working together on the project, but are looking to expand the partnership to other public service broadcasters and internet service providers (ISPs).

Its aim is to create a standards-based open environment for people who receive television over broadband, providing free content via services like the BBC's iPlayer and ITV Player.

As the scheme is part of the BBC Executive's partnership proposals, it must now gain approval from the BBC trust and undergo public consultation.

"Television and broadband are a compelling combination," said BT chief executive Ian Livingston.

"Together they can offer live TV along with an unrivalled choice of on-demand content and interactive services. It will mean that you can watch what you want whenever you want on your television."

A think-tank recently advised that the government should invest in the improvement of broadband infrastructure instead of expanded public service broadcasting.

The Social Media Foundation argued that high-speed broadband was capable of providing larger amounts of public content more efficiently.
